Virtues In the Eyes of A Kid
During our third quiz, my 11-year old pupil answered on his test paper, “We can exercise the virtues learned… by finding time to pray to God no matter how busy we are and by donating… to those who need it most.” He is a year seven pupil whom I find to be quiet and yet intelligent boy.
At first, I was wondering whether he is a pupil with special needs (or a special child, whatever) I just find him quiet and seems not motivated to learn until I started calling him to recite and nd giving him tasks like distributing quiz papers. He has the tendency to do other things like draw or doddle while I am just giving lectures about our lesson. I admit, I’m a boring teacher. That’s how I got or learned from my past teachers. Errr, I’m not blaming them, heheheh. I was one of the naughty students during my time. And now, I reap what I sow, LOL!
But what touched me from his answer? Ey, it’s a wake up call for me. Sometimes, I find myself busy and has difficulty getting up from bed to pray! The community was so eager in formulating our community life plan but I find it too structured now. I’ve been asking myself what happened to those brothers who were so eager in putting it in writing yet some of them are now gone for morning prayer. Here is a young boy telling me that no matter how busy we are, we can still practice the virtue of perseverance in praying. WTH sometimes….
Lately, I’ve been learning once again how to meditate, in an eastern way, particularly how the Zen Buddhists engage themselves in meditation. I always like to practice zen, which eventually becomes part of my Christian way of living as a religious. God, lead me. Somehow, practicing simple ways how to live life; breathe, eat, sleep, talk, walk, jog, work out and in everything that I can do and can have in simple ways… I think, if I start in that way, I will be able to live one Marist spirituality at a time: Simplicity. It’s seems to be quite hard but I’m trying to be faithful. Is there anything wrong with it? Reader, enlighten me then if you are in position to give me that light.
The virtues, when practiced one at a time, can be part of one’s life. But since everything comes from God, grace to persevere in living it is always and ever ready given by God. Jesus himself lived the virtues.
The young pupil of mine learned from our lesson: the Beatitudes. I learned from him, too. Thanks you Lord, make my day!

Whew…sounds rare? Yes, indeed…we teach and learn in our clienteles… In them, we see the greatness of God to enlighten us… A child can be an instrument for us to realize some things that we don’t mind but in his innocence and silence, we were able to reflect our way of life…
I too realize that any religious can’t be perfect but they try one’s best to be worth of God’s plan to them… in prayer we could have communion with God to inspire and enlighten us in our way of life…
“We can exercise the virtues learned… by finding time to pray to God no matter how busy we are and by donating… to those who need it most.” This could be a good fact for everyone to try and do… It is somehow telling that we learned virtues to others as we ask God’s intervention in us even the preoccupied life of anyone… Find time to communicate with Him and talk to this young mind who could be someone that has great thoughts of some philosophers like Confucius…:) Regards and God bless…
