I Am Proud To Be A Filipino
The weather yesterday made me decide not to attend the requiem Mass for the late former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino. It was gloomy and with intermittent rain showers. But this early morning, our Brother Provincial woke me up and asked me whether I wanted to go and be present during the funeral mass for Tita Cory. Without hesitation, I said, “yes” and he handed me one ticket; a gatepass or something to present which I used later to be allowed to enter at the back gate of the Manila Cathedral.
The Cathedral was full of people coming from different walks of life; aside from the immediate family members and foreign dignitaries, religious men and women from different congregations, security personnel, media and ordinary people were there sincerely praying together. The pillars were illuminated with yellow lights symbolizing Cory’s yellow ribbon.

While attentively listening to the homily of Fr. Catalino Arevalo, SJ, my mind recalled my early experiences how President Cory Aquino ruled the country in the early 80s. It was indeed turbulent years for her. I can still remember how my father scolded me to keep quiet and be attentive in listening to the AM radio (Radio Veritas) about a cou’p d’tat attempt against Aquino in 1987. I was seven years old that time. The Fr. Catalino did not forget to mention the legacies of Cory Aquino that made me feel proud of being a Filipino and as he said, “…she made me feel proud as a Filipino again…” Me, too.
It really
This attendance completed my sense of being a Filipino, and made me proud being part of the crowd admiring Cory Aquino’s legacy. In solidarity with all the Filipino people, I must say, “Mabuhay ka, Tita Cory!”

nakakalungkot nga. grabe, nung namatay lang sya, doon ko lang nalaman how great she is. i mean, in the university, we were taught about the ‘miseducation of the filipino people,’ with regards to history, and that made me believe that there was nothing great about the former president.
lalo na, hindi pa ako buhay nung People Power. pero ngayon, nagulat talaga ako. eye-opener sakin yung death nya.
