A Commitment to Take the Road Less Traveled
Aside from the graduation scheduled on October 12, Friday, eight Brothers (include me, please
) had just the graduation ceremony at Eucharistiana Center this afternoon., we may call it Closing Ceremony, and yet the same, right?
For 11 days of lecture and training with the Eucharistiana Center, in cooperation with Marist Asia-Pacific Center, we were able to finish it happily with many experiences and learning to share to other people. What we learned from Eucharistiana would be different. In this Institution, we experienced dealing with special children with special needs. I thought I was lucky enough that I can take care of myself. But here are the children with down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and mental retardation who taught us to be courageous and share life to others. It was not us, or let us say me, who taught them or be with them. They were the ones who journeyed with me for many days. What would you feel if a person who is bounded by the wheelchair will teach you how to do textile printing? Well, I don’t really know that, but I feel embarrassed. He is not bounded for he is able to express himself with his talent.
I had the difficulty at first to mingle with them. Anxious that somebody might just strike me anytime. As you can see, people with down syndrome are sweet and lovable. Yep, that’s true, but still I was anxious. Hey, I learned to play with them, too
‘Baste, a kid with his own world let me enter his imagination. How? I gave in to his tantrum. But my mistake, I was not helping him. I should be firm yet gentle with him.
Our closing ceremony was not meant to end there. It’s a call on how to share what we have learned from this special children. Who knows, one day, I meet another child somewhere, who needs special care. Isn’t it beautiful to chat or just be present with him or her again? You don’t know, you might have also a special need just like the autistic children or those with down syndrome or cerebral palsy. Let’s begin taking the road less traveled, for in that road, more experiences of joy will return to you as you stop a while sometimes and reflect about the road less traveled.
Here’s the clip, presenting “me” hahaha! Why? Just find out by watching what we have done. Thanks to Teacher Rona, a compassionate, beautiful and kind teacher to the special children (I’m a special kid, too
) She made that for me ![]()
